Sampling Corriedale

I realize it’s impossible to know how great these yarns feel just from these photographs, but try to imagine how bouncy and squooshy they are. Even though they don’t have the bounce and elasticity of Cormo, the stretchiness they do have is important to the resilience of garments made from this wool.

I flicked all of the locks for these samples, and then spun them in varying ways from the lock. Instead of washing the locks in tulle sausages as with the Merino and Cormo (see The Tulle-Sausage Method), I washed batches of about 1 pound each in a tub. This washing method does not keep the locks arranged, so I had a bit more waste than I like as I got them all lined up for flicking.

The staple length of Corriedale averages between 3 and 6 inches, and the locks on this particular fleece were about 5 inches. This is a good length for tucking the ends in enough to avoid pilling and without needing a lot of twist, which makes the wool wiry.
